ROLE: USER EXPERIENCE ANALYSIS, DESIGN THINKING
Group setting DISCOVERY MODE to the extreme!
Collaborating to solve wicked problems at OLSS
Plan a Design Thinking (DT) learning experiment, conduct, and evaluate the session using a set of evaluation methods. This activity assisted in communicating the importance of services and systems that would benefit tracking the quality, safety, workforce, and response readiness.
The project effort, design, and analysis activities involved capture the affinity mapping, DT evaluation methods, and overall themes identified. We observed first hand how it cultivated an already research-driven culture allowing for the continuation in ideation phases, create tangible prototypes, and sharing the story amongst the greater FDA community.
With 12 participants in total, we collected, synthesized and grouped similar trending items to identify a set of primary themes. Throughout the activity of categorizing these primary themes, additional similarities in the data appeared, creating secondary themes to breakdown the complexity of what we obtained and observed during the session.

We had valuable insights out of the eight primary themes uncovered. With leadership, FDA, and individual Offices/Centers assisting in the success of the OLSS, there would be greater support through these areas identified.
Within the organization there was a lack of accountability for safety hazards, this led to Offices + Centers advocating for safety protocols
Internal roadblocks on external development team(s) to deliver long-term mission/vision goals of the OLSS + FDA
Scientists, Statisticians, and users wanted to collaborate throughout the organization to avoid language inconsistencies and processes
With main themes identified, insights would later be embedded into product development initiatives. These areas were the driver for change and the focus for future phases of OLSS' expanded reach
Reduced Incidents & Improved Efficiency
Improved Laboratory Quality
Potential for reduction in cost associated to incidents that would have occured
