UI/UX Design, Product Strategy, 2025
The Army Artificial Intelligence Integration Center (AI2C) was developing digital experiences to support its AI/ML mission and goals. With multiple product concepts moving through development, teams needed a more efficient and consistent approach to implementing interface design, bridging the gap between design and development hand-off.
Individual projects had their own requirements, but many shared the same basic elements: navigation, forms, buttons, icons, typography, and layout patterns. I created a design system that could support the individual products while giving developers practical standards to reference during implementation.

5 months
TEAM
1 UX Lead, 1 UI Designer, 1 Engineer
TOOLS
Figma
Declining Engagement
Product teams were working on multiple initiatives, often with short development cycles and different interface requirements
Design Standardization
Recurring design decisions were being addressed at the individual product level. Without shared guidance, teams had fewer opportunities to reuse established patterns across projects.
Outdated Interface
There were parts of the UI that included MUI components while other CSS and iconography were mismatched or incomplete.
Established a design system around baseline foundations: color, typography, sizing + spacing, components, and usage guidelines. The work included documenting all aspects of color accessibility, establishing visual hierarchy, identifying layout conventions, and organizing recurring interface patterns. The objective was to make design decisions accessible to both designers and developers without requiring each project to define its own starting point.
Streamlined Navigation
The design system allowed other teams to adopt standard approaches to solving product integration problems, including products like AIDE.
Optimized Workflows
Increased collaobration and integration of Material UI baseline elements and components with product efforts
Modern Visual Design
Created a functional and accessible design system that aligned with current brand guidelines and expectations in standardizing components.
I explored how design tokens could make these standards easier to reference. Color token cards, including light and dark treatments, documented values and intended usage for teams working on modernization efforts for products outside the Material UI framework.
This gave designers a more consistent way to adopt and select component treatments while keeping related patterns together.
For developers, the design files provided a clearer reference for the properties and behaviors associated with recurring interface elements.
(Light) Token Card
(Dark) Token Card
The work established several tangible foundations for AI2C’s digital products.
The design system documented shared visual standards, organized reusable components, introduced a curated icon library, and provided Figma assets that could be referenced across product initiatives.
